Sustainable fashion: less is more

This disposable approach to fashion impacts on the environment.  The demand for ever changing clothing in our closets consumes more natural resources to grow the fibre and manufacture the clothing, and then unwanted clothing ends up as landfill.

A commitment to eco fashion takes a different mindset. Choosing organic clothing helps reduce the impact on the environment, and it also encourages a more sustainable approach to fashion.  Sustainable fashion is about thinking about clothing in holistic way - valuing the investment the planet has made in an item of clothing, valuing the energy and effort people have put into crafting and designing the clothing, and therefore treating clothing with more respect. Eco fashion can also be about buying a smaller number of items of quality clothing that we love and which express who we are and what we value.  Less is more when it comes to eco fashion.

In today’s society, despite the fact that we continue to consume we never really seem to be satisfied – there is always something else we want and more things to consume.  We don’t seem to achieve that inner peace that we are craving.   In the ‘The Paradox of our Time’ by the 14th Dalai Lama, he quotes:

We have bigger houses but smaller families;
more conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less sense;
more knowledge, but less judgement;
more experts, but more problems;
more medicines, but less healthiness;
We've been all the way to the moon and back,
but have trouble crossing the street to meet
the new neighbour.

We build more computers to hold more
information to produce more copies than ever,
but have less communication;
We have become long on quantity, but short on quality.
These are times of fast foods but slow digestion;
Tall men but short character;
Steep profits but shallow relationships.
It's a time when there is much in the window,
but nothing in the room.

Let’s slow down our consumption.  Buy organic clothing with thoughtfulness.  Respect the people involved in the entire supply chain who create beautiful organic cotton clothing. Respect our planet and be thankful for the air, water and land that provides for our lifestyle.
